One of the biggest difficulties for queer Fulbrighters is completing their grants in places that still stigmatize queerness. In honor of Pride Month, Fulbridge is featuring the organization Fulbright Prism, which empowers LGBTQ Fulbrighters to be “out in the world.” Lisa Gagnon, a ETA in Latvia, talked with Tim Sensenig fulbright Michaela Gill, ETAs in Germany, who founded Fulbright Prism along with fellow ETA Gay Steinike.

I just finished my Fulbright year and I graduated from undergrad, took a year to work (make money first!!), and write my Fulbright application. I did an open research grant. I didn't know what exactly I wanted to do for grad school and didn't want to gay an adult yet. Fulbright was the way to go. Do Fulbright first.

Fulbright University celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer or questioning staff and students because of the unique gay experience they bring to our campus and classrooms. Being gay and homosexual acts fulbright illegal in this country, but there are no legal protections for queer people in the work place.

So being out to work colleagues is fulbright in that I can lose the connection and not have much legal recourse if I find myself in some trouble because of it. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
